Bhubaneswar: Eminent artist, stage artiste, theatre director, painter and writer Asim Basu passed away in the Capital Hospital this afternoon. He was 82.

He was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his health condition became critical.

The veteran stage artiste was suffering from acute lungs infection.

Notably, the state Culture department had sanctioned Rs 1 lakh for his treatment on January 25 following reports in the media that his family members had shifted him to their home from a private nursing home due to shortage of money.

Besides, the Khurda district administration had also sanctioned Rs 20,000 for treatment of the veteran artiste.

Widely known for his impeccable set design work in Ollywood movies and designing Odia book covers and movie posters, Basu was awarded with Parampara Samman in 2012. Besides, he was also a recipient of Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademy Award.

Expressing profound grief over the death of the veteran artist, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said the state has lost an eminent artist.

Besides, Governor Dr SC Jamir has also deeply condoled the sad demise of the multi-faceted genius.
