Dhenkanal: Two days after three elephants - two adult females and one calf - were found electrocuted to death in Borapada forest under Kapilas Forest Range in Dhenkanal Forest Division, two forest department officials were suspended today.

Forester Punyabikash Bhoi and forest guard Srikant Guru were suspended by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Dhenkanal Division.

Talking to media persons, DFO Rinku Kumari said, “According to post mortem report the elephants had died 24 hours earlier. The forester and forest guard were suspended as they took 24 hours for detection of the deaths.”

Show cause notices were also sent to Sadar Ranger Bibhuti Bhusan Patnaik and Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU).

FIRs have also been lodged against four employees of Enzen Global Solutions Pvt Limited, a private company engaged by CESU to provide electricity-related services to consumers in Dhenkanal and Angul districts.

Complaints have been filed against Divisional Head Mohit Bhatt, Sub-Divisional Head Dilip Sahu, Commercial Head Kumaresh Jena and Junior Manager Chandan Barik of Enzen.

DFO Kumari has alleged that since joining the Dhenkanal Division three months back, she has written twice to CESU to disconnect the electricity line hanging at a low height in the forest, but no action was taken by the latter that led to such a mishap.

“A high level discussion is being held as the problem only exists in this circle of CESU. Accidental death is at a rise because of sagging of wires of CESU, so further steps will be taken after the discussion,” she added.
