Rourkela: Tension prevailed at Kukerama Panchayat under Nuagaon block in Sundergarh district today after a four-year-old boy was trampled to death by an elephant last night.

Sources said a herd of three elephants had entered into the village last night. One of the elephants destroyed the house the baby was sleeping in and later crushed him to death.

The pachyderms also damaged many other houses in the locality. On receiving information, forest officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation and drive away the wild animals.

Locals alleged that though wild elephants continue to wreak havoc in the district, no steps have been taken by the district administration for a permanent solution to the elephant menace.

Around three months ago, an ex-Sarpanch was trampled to death by a tusker at Harpali village under Kuanrmunda Forest Range in the district.
