Dhenkanal: After a massive operation, Forest Department officials rescued an elephant calf that had slipped into an open well at Jamujhara village in Baruan.K panchayat under Kamakshyanagar area of Dhenkanal district late on Friday night.

Locals spotted the four-year-old elephant inside the well in the wee hours today and alerted the officials of forest department. On getting information, a team of forest officials rushed to the spot and launched a massive rescue operation to pull the baby elephant out of the well.

With the help of a JCB machine, a pathway was created so that the pachyderm could easily come out of the well.

Senior forest officials including Dhenkanal Sub-Divisional Forest Officer (SDFO) and Kamakshyanagar Ranger were present at the spot and monitored the rescue operation.

"We were happy to see the efforts of forest department as the baby elephant soon moved towards the forest," said a villager.
