Ganjam: Tension prevailed in Pandarakhalli vilage under Pandia Panchayat of Ganjam district after an elderly couple was allegedly thrashed and forced to eat faeces by villagers on suspicion of practising witchcraft.

As per reports, the villagers tied hands of the couple and attacked them for allegedly practising ‘black magic’ in the village.

Acting on a tip-off, Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of Purusottampur police station reached the spot and rescued the couple. The couple has been provided security cover.  Adequate police force has been deployed in the village to avoid any further flare up, informed the Police.

"We received an information on May 11 night that Sudarshan Behera of Pandarakhalli and his wife have been detained by some villagers on suspicion of practising witchcraft. We rushed to the spot and pacified the mob with help of some local public representatives. The couple were rescued and after medical treatment handed over to their relatives. A complaint has been filed and further action will be taken after a discussion with higher authorities," said Purusottampur IIC AK Barik.
