Bhubaneswar: With the festival of lights, Diwali, round the corner, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has decided to conduct special drives to put a check on transportation of crackers and other inflammable items in trains.

As per decision, three divisions –Khurda Road, Sambalpur and Waltair have been directed to launch special safety drive to keep a strict vigil on the safety of passengers.

Senior ECoR officials informed that carrying of inflammable objects like crackers, gas cylinders, acid, petrol, kerosene, etc., during train journey is a punishable offence under the Railway Act 1989 and the offender may get an imprisonment of up to 3 years.

The railways have also sought assistance from passengers if they find any one carrying inflammable items by reporting it to Railway staff including TTEs, Station Managers, Railway Protection Force (RPF) & Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel.

Passengers can call Help Line Number 182 to report any incident concerning crackers on train.

“Surprise checks will be carried out randomly in trains in this regard in case of any suspicious activity,” said a senior official.
