Berhampur: In a major success for Odisha police, Babul Paswan, a dreaded criminal of Jharkhand and one of his associate Jitendra Nayak were arrested by Bhanjanagar police in two separate encounters on Friday.

Police sources said, more than 40 criminal cases are registered against Paswan, who is also one of the key members of Jharkhand’s PLFI. One pistol, two live bombs and a car has been seized from his possession.

Paswan had taken ‘Supari’ (contract) from someone in Odisha to kill an accused during his production in court, informed SP Asish Singh.

After getting a tip-off about Paswan and two of his associates, police had beefed up security and put up blockades at several places.

Senior officials said two rounds were fired at police after they intercepted a suspicious car in which Paswan was travelling near Nidhiapali.

Later, Paswan was injured in police retaliation. He has now been admitted to MKCG hospital and his condition is said to be critical.

Paswan’s associate Jitendra Nayak, who had earlier escaped from the spot, was nabbed after another encounter by police near Tarasing area.

A pistol, live bullets and a motorcycle have been recovered from his possession while further investigation in connection with the incident is on.
