Kendrapara: In a suspected case of dowry death, police today recovered the body of a woman from Kharasrota River near Chunabandha village under Aul police limits of the district. The deceased has been identified as Gouri Behera from Bharigada village in Rajkanika.

Gouri’s family has  registered a case at Rajkanika police station alleging that their daughter was being tortured by her in-laws since the day of marriage owing to various demands. They also stated that Gouri was under severe mental duress due to torture over dowry-related issues.

According to sources, two years back Gouri got married to Samar Kumar of Bharigada village as per the Hindu rituals and traditions.

The family further alleged in the report that she has been murdered by her in-laws as no dowry demand was fulfilled.  Rajkanika police has initiated an investigation after a complaint was registered by her family members.

“Gouri's mother-in-law used to torture her daily asking for a Godrej wardrobe and electrical appliances like fridge and washing machine. Her in-laws used to beat her every day, spill hot water on her. They strangulated her, tied both her hands and then threw her into the river," alleged one of Gouri’s acquaintances.

"A case has been registered following the complaint. The body has been sent for post mortem, the report of which is awaited. Investigation is on,” said a police official.

However, the in-laws of Gouri could not be contacted over the issue.
