Rayagada: A Belgian shepherd of the CRPF dog squad, injured during disposal of an improvised explosive device (IED) near Hatamunigada in the district on November 3, will be taken to Chennai for better treatment.

The four-year-old sniffer dog sustained injuries in upper part of right eye and head.

Informing newsmen about the decision, MK Sharma, Commandant, 4th battalion, said, “For better treatment as recommended by the Chief Vet of the district, the injured canine will be sent to the Madras Medical College and the process has begun for the same.”

He added, “The Belgian shepherd will be on duty as no better canine is available in the CRPF at present. The canine has got training courses twice at the Indian Institute of IED Management.”

Notably, the Rayagada district police had requested the CRPF to help in defusing an IED planted by Maoists on a road near Hatamunigada on November 3. The sniffer dog sent there to undertake the explosive disposal job accidentally placed one of his feet on the detonator causing the blast, thereby injuring self.
