Balasore/Bhubaneswar: Even as doctors at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Puri are up in arms after being assaulted by the relatives of a patient who died, a doctor at the DHH in Balasore was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after being attacked by the kin of a patient alleging medical negligence.

Medicine specialist at the DHH, Bharat Samal was rushed to the ICU after his condition deteriorated following the attack.

Samal has received head injuries in the gruesome attack, sources said.

The aggrieved kin of the patient alleged ill-treatment by hospital authorities and attacked the doctor inside the hospital campus.

“I was examining the condition of a patient. All of a sudden an old man, believed to be the relative of a patient who died in the morning, rushed towards me and started abusing me. When I didn’t paid attention towards him, he pulled out an iron rod and gave a huge blow on the backside of my head. I was unconscious after that,” Samal said.
Relatives of the patient alleged that the deceased was not treated properly.

“They (doctors) simply referred our patient to SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack without examining his condition. When his condition deteriorated and they took a long time to process the discharge formalities. Had they released us early, the patient could have been saved,” rued a relative of the patient.

On the other hand the doctors rejected such a claim.

“We always try to give the best service to the patients. Everything takes time and so that was the case,” a doctor at DHH said.
