Doctor couple arrested for prescribing poor quality medicines

Cuttack: A doctor couple has been arrested and sent to jail by Vigilance sleuths for giving poor quality medicines to cancer patients. Moreover, the owner of JBSL medicine company Sudhanshu Das has also been arrested and sent to jail for manufacturing sub-standard medicines.

The doctor couple has been identified as former head of radiology department of Acharya Harihar Cancer Hospital Surendranath Senapati and his wife Dipti Rani Samant.

According to sources, the hearing on the bail plea of the doctor couple will be conducted tomorrow at the special Vigilance court.

"I have served the the people of Odisha and I am not a criminal. My patients know what kind of a person I am," said arrested doctor Surendranath Senapati.

"Their bail plea will be heard by the special vigilance court tomorrow. We have not taken them on remand and if there is a need then we will apply before the court to take them on remand," said special Vigilance lawyer Ajay Kumar Patnaik.

Earlier, Vigilance department carried out raids at 6 places including the hospitals of both the doctors in connection with amassing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.
