Burla: The authorities of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) hospital here on Thursday handed over the girl child to its biological parents, after DNA test report confirmed that the child was swapped at the hospital.

The report received by the police established that Gagan Bihari Patra and his wife, who had earlier claimed the baby girl was theirs are the biological parents of the said girl.

Gagan and his wife, who hail from Nakati Deula area, had been handed over a dead baby girl by the hospital authorities. Refusing to accept the dead infant, Gagan filed a complaint at the Burla Police outpost alleging that his baby was swapped with another baby in the same ward in the hospital.
Gagan also demanded a DNA test.

The incident occurred on May 21. The blood samples of both the women and their babies were sent to State Forensic Lab in Bhubaneswar on May 25.

On the other hand, the other baby has been handed over to the childline authorities after his health stabilized.

“An internal inquiry committee was set up, which suggested a DNA test and recommended action based on the DNA report. We have not received the report officially. Once we receive the report, we will initiate action against whosoever is behind the incident. We are also taking steps so that such incidents are not repeated in future,” said VIMSAR director Sunamali Bagh.
