Bhubaneswar: The woman who allegedly killed her husband and buried the body under ground at Dhirikuti sahi slum in Mancheswar police station area here, has confessed to the crime after being arrested from Nimapada area in Puri district today.

Giving a blow by blow account of the circumstances leading up to the murder, Deepanjali Das, widow of the deceased and the prime accused in the case, said that she murdered him on June 26 and buried him 4-5 feet beneath the ground inside the hut in the evening.

"Like every day, he returned home in an inebriated condition and thrashed me and my kids severely. After he fell asleep, I tied his legs and hands and hit him with a crowbar to death. I started digging the ground at 12 noon and took six/seven hours to complete it for burying him", she said.

Deepamjali said her husband Ashok Das, a resident of Keonjhar, had been torturing her since three months after her marriage. "I married him five years ago. I was not spared by him for a single day since three months after the marriage," she said.

Even though she requested neighbours in the slum to intervene in their conflict, nobody came forward to resolve their marital discord, she alleged.

When asked whether anybody else assisted her in committing the crime, she said she did it all alone.

Notably, a friend of the deceased had lodged a missing complaint with Mancheswar police a few days back.

When locals of the slum complained of foul smell emanating from Ashok’s house, police dug up the ground on Saturday. The body was recovered five feet under the ground inside the house after breaking open the lock on Saturday in presence of a Magistrate.

A cloth was found tied around the neck of the victim when the body was exhumed. A driving licence recovered from the house helped the police establish the identity of the deceased.
