Bhubaneswar: Odisha police today classified the recent incident of a minor girl gang raped allegedly by four security personnel in Koraput district as a ‘Red Flag’ case.

At a Press meet, DGP RP Sharma today said the Koraput minor gang rape is a red flag case. A case has been registered at the Pottangi police station under Sections 376 (D), 377 of IPC and Section 6 of POCSO Act. He said investigation has begun and stringent action will be taken against persons involved in the incident if the allegations prove true. But the focus is to first identify persons involved in the crime, he added.

Asked on alleged involvement of security personnel in the incident, the DGP said, “CRPF, BSF and CoBRA and police personnel often commute in those areas. Naxals also wear the uniforms of the security personnel. All scientific methods are being used in the investigation process to identify the persons involved.”

Meanwhile, a three member team of Crime Branch have begun the investigation into the incident. A forensic expert from Berhampur will reach the spot soon to assist in the investigation. Besides, an expert doctor will also be involved in medical examination of the survivor, the DGP added.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has asked the State Home Secretary and Additional Director General (ADG) of Human Rights Protection Cell to inquire and submit a report on the incident within a week. The commission gave the direction after five human rights activists filed petitions on the gang rape. The OHRC also directed that if required, steps should be taken to conduct the medical examination of the survivor outside the State.

On the other hand, various medical examinations of the survivor have been conducted at the Koraput District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO) Dr Parsuram Champati Ray said, "The patient is now in gynaecology ward and her health condition is stable with some minor stomach ache complaints."

Locals continued to block Jeypore-Visakhapatnam road for 33 hours protesting the gang rape. As per the latest reports, agitators lifted the blockade after Collector and SP reached Kunduli and held discussions.
