Puri/ Konark:  People in large number thronged the world famous Sun temple in Konark on to offer special prayers to Sun on the occasion of Samba Dashmi on Thursday. Lakhs of devotees also gathered at Chandrabhaga beach, situated near the Sun temple to take a holy dip in the sea on the auspicious day.

Samba Dashami is a unique ritual observed in the Pausha month in Odisha as per the traditional Odia calendar. On this day mothers observe special puja and rituals dedicated to Lord Surya for the good health and long life of their children.

“Every mother offers a certain special food to the Sun God in the name her child or children. It could be an Odia baked pitha or fried, fruits to sweets, curry or even dahi, but a varied number of dishes are prepared in almost all houses to offer to the God,’’ says Mamata Das, a mother of two.

Samba Dashami is observed on the 10th day during the Shukla Paksha or waxing phase of moon in Pausha month (December – January).

According to legend, Samba, son of Lord Krishna, was afflicted by leprosy and was cured by the Sun God Surya after 12 years of penance near Konark.

As per rituals, the women also observed the Sudasha Brata as Samba Dashami was observed on Thursday. On this day, the women tie a sacred thread on their arms. The women are required to keep the thread tied to the arm till the next Sudasha Brata.

“Women in Odisha observe Sudasha Brata to appease goddess Lakshmi for their family’s well being with much dedication,” said Dr. Naresh Chandra Das, researcher, Jagannath Culture.
