Cuttack: Tightening the noose around the neck of industrial units in the Jagatpur area here for their role in the spread of the dengue menace, the district administration on Tuesday sealed one more industrial unit for not complying with the stipulated guidelines to maintain hygiene in the area.
Official sources said Jagananth Food Company was sealed in the presence of district administration officials. After inspection of the premises of the food processing company, it was found to be violating the cleanliness rules.
Besides, authorities also sent show-cause notice to eight more industrial units in the area, which have failed to mobilise sanitation teams as per the directive of the administration, and sought a report from them.
“We have decided to constitute 12 additional squads to maintain cleanliness in the area. Their work will be monitored by a special officer,” an officer said.
District Collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra said, "We have procured machinery to continue cleaning the area in evening time also. To expedite the drive, we have asked people to cooperate in sanitation and cleanliness work. The Blood Bank in SCB medical college and hospital has been directed to stock sufficient amount of platelet."
On Monday, Cuttack district reported 35 new cases of dengue. Of them, 17 were from Jagatpur area alone. With this, the total number of dengue-affected persons in Cuttack district climbed to 228. Across the state, 106 persons tested positive for dengue on Monday, including 41 from Keonjhar district, taking the total to 1,476 from 1,370 on Sunday.
Locals alleged that the vector borne disease was first reported from Jagatpur industrial estate in 2013, but the civic body authorities took no preventive measures to avoid a recurrence. “It is strange that the officials are visiting these palaces after the outbreak. Warnings about dengue should have been issued before the onset of the monsoon. But the CMC started its awareness drive only after dengue cases started pouring in from the area,” a resident alleged.
They also alleged that closed industrial units, which have turned breeding sites for dengue mosquitoes, are not being cleaned periodically, aggravating the situation.
