Baragarh: The district headquarters town of Bargarh has turned into mythological ‘Mathura Nagari’ and Ambapali village has become ‘Gopapura’ with the world famous Dhanu Jatra of Bargarh kicking off on a colourful note today.

MPs Prasanna Acharya and Prabhas Singh inaugurated the event in presence of district Collector, local MLA and other dignitaries.

The entire Mathura Nagari will be ruled by the demon king Kansa in the 11-day long performance, considered to be the biggest open air theatre. Similarly, Gopapura will immerse in fun and frolic of Krishna and Balaram. Jeera River will be the River Yamuna during the festival.

The first day of the fair began with Kansa’s accession to throne followed by wedding of his sister Devaki with Basudev at local Ramji temple. The Dhanu Jatra committee took out a cultural procession in the town today morning.

Bhubaneswar Pradhan is playing the role of Kansa after being selected from among 23 aspirants by a jury, while Sriyansh Mohapatra has been selected for the role of Lord Krishna.

Around 70 artistes will perform various roles during Dhanu Jatra at Mathura while about 40 will enact the happenings at Gopapura. This apart, as many as 3,000 artistes of 120 cultural troupes from across the country will perform at the Raj Durbar and Ranga Mahal of King Kansa during the festival.
