Bhubaneswar: The home guards staging dharna at the Lower PMG square here demanding fulfilment of their seven-point charter of demands, including restructuring of pay scale according to 7th Pay Commission, were forcefully dispersed by the police today, informed President of Rajya Gruharakhi Mahasangha (Odisha Home Guards Association) Upendra Mohapatra.

The home guards were holding a peaceful demonstration at Lower PMG, by covering their mouth with black cloth since last four days.

However, an argument ensued between the Gruharakhi Mahasangha and Gruharakhi Kalyan Board yesterday. While the Board claimed that the government has hiked the salaries of the home guards, the Mahasangha denied it alleging it as an effort to mar the protest.

"We demand social security of the home guards and they should not be treated in such inhuman way. If the home guards are maintaining law and order and guarding property of the nation by putting their life at risk, there should be some concern for their life also," said an agitating home guard Dhaniram Sahoo.

The home guards have been demanding salary as per a 2015 ruling of the Supreme Court, which states that home guards should get remuneration equal to any other regular police personnel.

They alleged that their recent salary hike was not in accordance with the SC ruling or the 7th Pay Commission.
