Khurda: Following the State government’s announcement few days ago that water of Daya river is not fit for use, residents of Khurda town today demanded immediate measures to avail Naraj barrage water instead of harmful water from Daya.

The locals questioned as to why the Khurda Public Health Department is supplying polluted Daya river water to the residential areas including East Coast Railway Colony, IDCO quarters and RWSS areas.

Ramesh Chandra Swain, a local resident, said, “After the media report on Daya, resentment is brewing among residents of Khurda as the polluted river water is still being provided to them.”

Khitish Mohan Das, another local resident, said, “Why step- motherly treatment is being meted out to people of Khurda? Why drinking water is not being drawn from other sources?”

Bar Association members here have threatened that if the issue is not sorted out at the earliest, a PIL will be filed in the Orissa High Court to draw the court’s attention.

Earlier, Revenue Minister Maheswar Mohanty had expressed concerns over the quality of water in the Daya River and said it is not fit for drinking and stressed on spreading awareness on waste water treatment.
