Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police today recorded the statements of the parents of DAV School of Business Management (DSBM) student Tanya Banerjee, who allegedly committed suicide in the college hostel recently.

The statement of Tanya's mother was recorded at the Capital Police Station today. Her mother alleged that physical and mental torture inflicted by a few seniors forced Tanya to commit suicide and demanded strong action against the persons responsible for Tanya's death.

Her mother today revealed that before Tanya's death, a girl had called them up and spoke against Tanya. "She also warned me that strong action is being taken against Tanya," she added.

Besides, the family members further alleged that the police are not expediting the probe process since one of the college girls interrogated in this connection belongs to an influential family.

"Registering a case under Section-306 of the IPC is not sufficient. I want strong action against those who forced my daughter to take the extreme step," her mother said.

Earlier on Tuesday, police said the post mortem report confirmed that Tanya died of suffocation due to hanging.

It may be mentioned that Tanya’s body was found hanging inside the hostel of DSBM in Bhubaneswar on November 28.

Tanya’s family had alleged that the incident was a “well-planned murder.” The family claimed that Tanya had called her mother and was complaining of harassment by hostel inmates over false allegations of theft of some cosmetic items.
