Cuttack: It was a busy day for the Commissionerate police on Saturday. In the morning, they arrested Subas Behera, an aide of D brothers - Sushil and Sushat Dhalasamanta - from Kalyani Nagar area. In the evening, they interrogated Sambit Behera, an office bearer of Cuttack Nagar Yuvak Sangh for his suspected links with the gangsters.
In between, family members of Deepak Mallick alias Dipu and Om Prakash Swain alias Om, the suspected henchmen of the duo, also deposed before the police here to present their side.
Police said, Subas Behera (Mantu) was a close associate of D-brothers and was suspected to have executed several crimes for his bosses in the past few years.
“Mantu has more than a dozen criminal cases against him in various police stations. We will be able to get more on his criminal antecedents after interrogation,” an official said on condition of anonymity.
A day after asking two government departments to share information on the criminal brothers, the Commissionerate police today questioned Cuttack Nagar Yuvak Sangh secretary Sambit Behera for his alleged links with the D-brothers. Though interrogation details are yet to be known, police expect Behera to divulge some information on the duo and their activities as the latter was involved in organizing various social welfare events in the silver city, including blood donation camps.
Sources said the Sangh, a charitable organisation, was floated by the Dhalsamanta brothers a few years back. Sambit, who was working as the secretary of the organization, was drawing a salary for his services, sources added.
Police believe the interrogation of Sambit may give some leads into the financial transactions of the gangster brothers which they may have done through the charitable organization to make their black money white.
In a related development, Choudwar jail authorities today received the court order allowing shifting of the D-brothers from the jail. While the court has asked the police to take elder brother Sushant Dhalasamant to Jharpada jail in Bhubaneswar, it ordered to shift younger brother Sushil Dhalasamant to Balasore jail.
The criminal siblings are expected to be moved to their respective jails on Monday following completion of officialformalities, jail sources said.
“After receiving the court order today, we have forwarded a copy of the order to IG (Prisons). He will direct the jail superintendents of Jharpada and Balasore to accommodate the criminals,” Choudwar jail superintendent Niranjan Das said.
