Cuttack: The Cuttack Nagar Congress is scheduled to stage a protest today against the statement of Justice MM Das, the head of the commission inquiring into the multi-crore chit-fund scam in the State at a BJD function yesterday.

Party activists, led by Nagar Congress president Mohammed Moquim, will stage the protest in front of the commission’s office located in the premises of the police headquarters here

Notably, Justice Das, who was the chief guest at an event organised by BJD Lawyers’ Forum, had said that people invested money in various chit fund companies out of greed and the government had precious little to do in the case. He dubbed it 'an unnatural calamity'.

“What can the State government do in this regard? It can only compensate the duped depositors to some extent. It is not justified to return money to the depositors with interest,” Das said in the meeting attended by Law Minister Arun Sahu, Cuttack-Barabati MLA Debasis Samantaray and Convener of BJD Legal Front advocate Milan Kanungo.

After his statement drew flak from all quarters of the society, Justice Das had said, “I believe there is no issue attending an advocates’ gathering. I attended the programme as a retired judge and not as a Commission head. What I have stated in the meeting is my personal opinion and the ruling party or the government has nothing to do with it. I know my job very well.”

Meanwhile, BJD tried to wash its hands off the issue saying the event was not a party event as alleged.

“Since he is a retired judge, I have nothing to say about his decision to attend a programme. I should not interfere in his meetings and schedules. Besides, the lawyers’ outfit is not a political institution; it provides legal aid to the poor and underprivileged…It is not a wing of BJD,” BJD spokesperson Ananta Das had said.
