Nabarangpur: Even though law says no child shall be subjected to physical punishment or mental harassment and whosoever contravenes this provision shall be liable for disciplinary action, instances of corporal punishment being meted out to students continue to crop up across Odisha.

A sixth class student of Nabarangpur Municipal Project Primary School on Friday was admitted to the district hospital in critical condition after being severely beaten up by his physical education teacher today.

According to family members of the student, the accused teacher Satya Mondal allegedly thrashed their kid black and blue for some unknown reasons.

"My son could not even walk after coming from school. When we inquired, he told about being thrashed by his physical education teacher. I took him to the police station where he fell unconscious. We then took him to hospital," said Purander Nayak, father of the child.

"Schools have been barred from giving any type of physical punishment to students. The existing law also prohibits the same. Stern action will be taken if the incident is found true. However, I am yet to receive any grievance related to the incident,” said block education officer, Chittaranjan Panigrahi.

Earlier on Wednesday, a primary student sustained injuries after being severely beaten up by his teacher at Timana Project Upper Primary School under Bargaon police limits in Sundergarh district.
