Cuttack: A man died as cops allegedly beat him up severely in custody at Narasinghpur police station in the district today.

Akula Senapati of Malisahi village under the same police station area sustained severe injuries and was rushed to SCB medical college and hospital here. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the ICU.

Senapati had a quarrel with a fellow villager over some trivial matter of crop damage. The man had lodged a complaint with police following the scuffle, based on which police lifted Senapati on Friday, family said.

The kin of the victim alleged that Akula sustained grievous injuries on head and chest after police thrashed him severely in custody.

Family members of the deceased demanded stringent action against the erring officials. They also demanded adequate compensation.

On the other hand, police denied the allegation as baseless. “Akula was admitted to a local hospital as his health condition was not well. Doctors referred him to Cuttack. His family was informed regarding the matter, but no one turned up to hospital”, Cuttack SP (Rural) Madhab Sahoo said.

The SP further added- “He was not taken to the police station. Cops had raided him following a complaint against him during which he attacked the raiding officials. Assistant Sub-inspector Bhagaban Sahoo was injured in the attack”.

Meanwhile, the SP ordered for probe into the incident. A DSP rank official will investigate into the incident, DSP Nagarjuna Dash said.

On the other hand, relatives of the deceased lodged a complaint at Mangalabag police station against the IIC of Narasinghpur police station holding him responsible for the death.

Apprehending law and order situation, three platoons of police have been deployed at Narasinghpur police station. Additional SP, DSP and local sub-collector have rushed to the spot and are monitoring the situation.

Tension ran high in Narasinghpur in the evening after the family members of the deceased and the locals staged a road blockade at the Block Office square demanding compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the family of the deceased, government job to the wife of the deceased and dismissal of the erring policemen from their service.
