Cuttack: Mangalabag police on Saturday arrested a conman for allegedly duping poor patients on the pretext of providing them financial assistance under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The accused has been identified as Sanjib Kumar Jena (28) of Bhogarai in Balasore district.

Police said, Jena had duped Rs 30,000 from one Tarini Mahanta of Mayurbhanj after assuring help to sanction Rs 6 lakh from the CM Relief fund for the treatment of the latter’s father who was suffering from renal disease.

Sources said, the accused had met Tarini who had come to SCB Medical College and Hospital along with his father to seek medical assistance on April 13.

After finding the father-son duo struggling near the SCB outdoors, Jena told about his contacts in Bhubaneswar who could help in arranging financial aid for the treatment from the CM’s Relief Fund.

On June 29, Tarini had paid Rs 30,000 to Jena who had assured to hand him the cheque after sanctioning of the amount from the relief fund.

Earlier, Mangalabag police had launched a massive crackdown on touts and agents who were diverting poor patients from SCB Medical College to other private nursing homes and hospitals last year.
