Bhubaneswar: The second phase surgery of the conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia that was scheduled for mid October is likely to be postponed due to acute shortage of blood.

AIIMS Neurosurgery Department Head Prof Ashok Mohapatra today said though health condition of the twins from Kandhamal district is stable, they are facing acute shortage of blood in their bodies. The duo is undergoing blood tranfusion at regular intervals, Mohapatra added.

“The stage-II surgery of the conjoined twins is unlikely to be conducted as per the schedule due to blood shortage. Blood is being administered to them at regular intervals,” he said.

It may be mentioned here that the first phase cranial separation surgery of the twins at the Neurosciences Centre of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi was succefully done on September 30. However, their heads are still joined. The duo had later been moved to general ward of the hospital on September 5.
