Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: After successful completion of first phase cranial separation surgery of the conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia at the Neurosciences Centre of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, the duo have been moved from the ICU to the general ward of the hospital today.

Doctors at the hospital said the health condition of the twins is normal and the next phase of the crucial surgery will be conducted one and half months later in mid October.

The 28-month-old craniopagus twins from Kandhamal district of the State were taken to AIIMS on July 13 where a team of 40 doctors including experts from Japan conducted the 24-hour long first phase of surgery.

Born to Bhuan Kanhar and Puspanjali Kanhar of Milipada in Kandhamal district, the plight of the twins was highlighted after OTV first broke the news about them a couple of months ago. Both of them are suffering from Craniopagus, a very rare condition wherein twins are joined at the head and have a high risk during separating surgical operation.

The Chief Minister Relief Fund has also approved financial assistance of Rs 1 crore towards the expenditure for the surgery of the rare twins.
