Bhubaneswar: Condition of Jaga, one of the conjoined twins – Jaga-Balia from Kandhamal who are presently awaiting their crucial second phase cranial separation surgery is unwell, informed Health Minister Pratap Jena today.

Jena further said that the duo has been kept under observation and after their condition improves a decision on the next phase of the surgery will be taken.

“We have contacted a renowned surgeon from the United States who is a pioneer in cranial separation surgery. The state government will provide all the expenditure necessary for the surgery,” Jena said.

Earlier the doctors had informed that the second phase surgery of the twins was scheduled to be performed in mid-October. The operation was postponed since the duo was suffering from acute blood shortage. They were undergoing regular blood transfusion, said sources.

The twins are presently being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The first phase surgery was carried out one and a half months earlier.

On August 29, a team of 40 specialists including doctors from neurosurgery, neuro-anaesthesia and plastic surgery departments completed the initial phase of the surgery which took nearly 20 hours. After their condition showed some signs of stability the twins were shifted from the ICU to the general ward of the AIIMS.

The twins who have been suffering from rare disorder with their heads joined at the cranium; hail from a poor family in Milipada village of Phiringia block in the tribal-dominated Kandhamal district.
