Bhubaneswar: Odisha's ace gymnast Rakesh Patra on Thursday qualified for the rings apparatus final in the men’s artistic gymnastics event at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG).

Rakesh topped the rings apparatus qualifying competition with a brilliant 13.950 points in the rings event. He got 5.600 points for his difficulty level and 8.350 points for execution.

The 26-year-old made the final in fifth spot behind Courtney Tulloch (15.200), Niles Wilson (14.750), Renee Cournoyer (14.200) and Scott Morgan (14.200). The final will be held on Sunday.

It is worthwhile to mention that Patra's inclusion in the CWG was fraught with controversies. He was dropped from the gymnastic squad on technical grounds as the selection committee chose to select gymnasts on the basis of their All round scores (an aggregate of all 6 apparatus) and not individual events. However following protests by Odisha Gymnastic Association and Patra himself filing a writ petition in the Delhi High Court, he was finally selected in the Indian squad.

Meanwhile, in the weightlifting category, India continues to shine with two golds in two days as it moved up to third place in the final medal tally with a total of three medals.

Weightlifter Sanjita Chanu clinched the medal in the women's 53 kg category at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) today while current world champion S. Mirabai Chanu and Gururaja sparkled to deliver a gold and a silver earlier on Thursday.
