Bhubaneswar: To ensure proper management and supervision of cooperative institutions, Odisha government today empowered the district collectors to act as additional registrar of cooperative societies in their respective districts.

The district collectors will now have their control over cooperative institutions like PACS (primary agriculture cooperative society), LAMPCS (Large Scale Adivasi Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies), SCS (state cooperative society), FSCS (Financial Services Compensation Scheme) and RCMS (Regional Cooperative Marketing Societies).

The district collectors were vested with powers of additional registrar, Cooperative Societies in their respective districts under the provisions of Odisha Co-Operative Societies Act, 1962 and Odisha Cooperative Societies Rules 1965, an official statement said.

Cooperative institutions have a major role to play in granting of crop loans, the supply of fertilizers and seeds and procurement of paddy. The function of cooperative organizations has increased after computerization.

The issue was raised in the last District Collectors conference.
