Baripada: The much-awaited Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district was dedicated to the people of Odisha by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today.

According to sources, all the infrastructure facilities like class rooms, laboratories, hostels and office rooms have been completed and classes of the first batch of MBBS students for 2017-18 session is also scheduled to start from today.

Out of the total 100 seats, 67 male and 33 female students have already taken admission in MBBS stream.

This is the fifth government-run medical college to come up in state after Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital inaugurated by CM Naveen on September 4 earlier this month. The other three medical colleges functioning are SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur and Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla.

The total number of seats in all state-run medical colleges meanwhile has gone up to 850 in Odisha.

The launch of the medical college at Mayurbhanj is expected to bring a change in the health scenario in the area and cater to the needs of adjacent states West Bengal and Jharkhand, health experts said.
