Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today distributed free laptops to meritorious students and gave away prizes to successful girls in the self-defence programme at college levels.

Attending a state level programme at Jaydev Bhawan here, Patnaik said the youth empowerment programme launched in 2013 is part of his government's ceaseless efforts for all round development of the youth in the state.

Remembering his father and former chief minister Biju Patnaik's dream, Patnaik said Biju Babu had reposed trust on youth power. His contribution for the youth mass is really commendable, he added.

Explaining the need for technology in the present days, the chief minister said; "Development of a country is impossible without technology. So, there is a need for technology in the education sector."

He also said his government has always given priority on women's empowerment.

Hailing the government move, the students described it as an inspiration for them. "Distribution of laptops to the students is a big inspiration for us. It will encourage us to move forward in the field of education," said Monalisa Satpathy, a student.

Higher Education, Science and Technology and Rural Development Minister Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy, MP Prasanna Patsani were present at the occasion.
