Bhubaneswar: With a few days left for the by-election to Bijepur assembly constituency, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced a mega irrigation system for the region, named as Gangadhar Meher Lift Canal System, to appease the farming community.

The project, which will pump water from Bargarh main canal through underground pipeline, will be set up at a cost of Rs 1250 crore.  It will benefit 32,000 hectares land including 25,600 hectares in Kharif and 7,000 hectares in Rabi season.

“Augmentation of irrigation potential has been a long standing demand of the people of Bargarh district especially the drought prone areas. In this regard we have decided to implement Bijepur Lift Canal System, which would be the first of its kind with underground pipleline based irrigation system,” Patnaik said while announcing the project.
