CBSE may do away with foreign languages from 3-language formula in schools

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The Central Board Of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come up with new amendments to the existing three-language formula and could remove the option of choosing foreign language from the set.

Sources from the board are believed to have discussed the matter with the Union Human Resource Development Ministry and poised to implement the new guidelines from the next academic year.

As per the new development, students who are keen on learning a foreign language might have to opt for it as the fourth or fifth language instead of a part of the 3-language set which included Hindi and English as compulsory in Hindi speaking states and English and  a regional language in other states.

Languages which are listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution should be taught under the three-language formula, while languages which are ‘purely foreign’ should be taught as a ‘fourth language’ as an elective subject.

A major chunk of the 18,000 affiliated institutions under the board offer the mother tongue or Hindi, English and a foreign language such as German as part of the three-language formula up to Class 8.

The board is also said to be deciding on extending the three-language formula from Class VIII to Class X.
