Bhubaneswar: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against Kulamani Biswal, director (Finance) of the state-run power utility NTPC Limited New Delhi for allegedly demanding Rs 5 lakh in cash from a private company director to fund a foreign trip with his wife and daughter.

As per CBI sources, Biswal had allegedly sought the financial favours from two officials including of M/s BGR Mining and Infra Private Limited’s director Rohit Reddy Bathina and one of his associates Prabhat Kumar.

The company BGR Mining and Infra Private Limited is part of a consortium that has recently been awarded a project by NTPC, sources said.

According to reports, NTPC director Kulamani Biswal along with his wife and daughter were supposed to go on a trip abroad on December 8 from Bhubaneswar and had asked Rohit Reddy to arrange Rs 5 lakh for the same.

Biswal had initially asked Rohit Reddy to arrange the cash in US dollars and latter had agreed to pay the amount in Indian currency at New Delhi.

The money was allegedly transferred through ‘hawala’ channel to Prabhat, who was to deliver it to Biswal at his residence in the Asian Games Village Complex at New Delhi.

A case under section 11 and 12 PC Act, 120 B of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Biswal, Rohit Reddy and Prabhat and further investigation in this connection is on, CBI officials said.
