Cash in prison, Sambalpur jailor suspended

Bhubaneswar:  Additional Director General (Prisons) Arun Kumar Ray on Thursday suspended Sushant Rout, the jailor of Sambalpur circle jail from whose chamber Rs 18 lakh was recovered during a raid on June 5.

Official sources said, Rout has been placed under suspension basing on the report submitted by two DIG-level officers in connection with the seizure of the cash, 9 mobiles, narcotics and other objectionable items from his chamber.

A joint probe was earlier ordered to ascertain the source of the ‘unaccounted money’ that was recovered.

Though Rout had then stated that the amount that was seized was prisoners cash and advance for purchase of jail materials, he could not substantiate such claims.

As part of the strategy to put a check on the crime syndicate operating from jails, a massive search operation was launched in over 13 prisons across the state on June 5.

The raids were conducted in Choudwar jail, Jharpada, Sambalpur, Keonjhar and other prominent jails in the state.
