Balasore: Police busted a major drug racket and arrested its kingpin in Arada Bazaar Masjid area of Balasore district during the wee hours today.

The cops seized 1.2 kg brown sugar worth around Rs 1.20 crore from her possession.

Police said after bringing the narcotic item from Kolkata, accused Sainara Bibi went to her home at Arada Bazaar Masjid area. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Sahadevkhunta police station IIC Pragyan Mohanty raided her house and arrested Sainara. Police are on the lookout for other accused in the incident.

Talking to mediapersons, Balasore SP Niti Shekhar said, "We are trying to trace the other persons involved in the racket and to find out the source and distribution network of the brown sugar."

Earlier on May 28, a team of the Excise Intelligence had conducted a raid in the area and seized brown sugar weighing around 1kg besides arresting a drug peddler.

The crackdown had come after OTV in a sting operation had exposed rampant narcotics trade that was flourishing in Balasore district due to unbridled nexus between dealers and corrupt officials in a report in April.
