Breach in ash pond: Pollution board issues show cause notice to Vedanta

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) today served a notice to Vedanta over a breach in ash pond during night hours on August 28.

After the wall of the ash pond no. 2 of Vedanta aluminium plant collapsed, liquid ash inundated around 100 acres of paddy fields in Katikela village in Jharsuguda.

Irate over the incident, the villagers had locked the main gate of the plant and staged protest demanding compensation for crop loss and relocation to a safer area.

A team comprising of the Tehsildar, officials of agriculture department and the State Pollution Control Board had conducted a joint probe and submitted a damage assessment report to the district collector.
