Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed after students under the aegis of All Odisha BPUT Students Association (AOBSA) went on rampage during a demonstration in front of the residence of Technical Education Secretary and acting VC, Sanjay Singh at Forest Park in Bhubaneswar.

Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) students allegedly ransacked the gate, name plate outside Singh’s residence after a protest here on Tuesday evening. Keeping in view the violence, police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the agitating students from the spot.

One student was reportedly injured after police used baton to disperse the agitating students after they went berserk during their protest. The injured students were admitted later to Capital Hospital for treatment.

“We chased few students who were indulging in hooliganism and have taken some into custody. We will see what action can be taken in this connection,” said Bhubaneswar DCP, Satyabrata Bhoi.

The BPUT students had staged the demonstration to press for postponement of their semester examination scheduled to be held in October last week.

The students alleged that earlier the authorities used to conduct the semester examination in November while it has been preponed to October this year.

The BPUT students had also staged demonstration in front of Technical Education and Skill Development minister Usha Devi's residence seeking her intervention in connection with the rescheduling of the examination citing that it has created problems in preparation for the semester.

The Commissionerate Police arrested seven persons on charges of ransacking house of the Technical Education Secretary yesterday evening.
