Puri: In a tragic incident, a Kanwariya (Bolbom devotee) drowned while taking bath in the Puri Sea here on Sunday.

As per the information, the deceased, identified as Sanjib Dalai of Pandua village in Jajpur district was returning after collecting water from Chandanpur Bhargavi River. Along with his fellow Kanwariyas, Sanjib halted at the Puri sea to take a bath.

The incident occurred after frequent high tides swept him away deep into the sea. Unable to trace Sanjib, his friends raised an alarm following which life guards dived into the sea and rescued him.

An ambulance was called and he was immediately rushed to the Puri Hospital in a critical condition, where the doctors, after a preliminary examination declared him dead, sources added.

“We were taking bath in the sea. After taking two three dips in the waves, I came outside but could not locate Sanjib. We searched for almost 10 minutes after which we saw the body of Sanjib rescued by the lifeguards,” said Subash Dalai, relative of Sanjib.
