Mayurbhanj: A day after a senior police official at Nabarangpur was accused of ‘misutilising his power’, a video of a home guard in civil dress thrashing a man accused of theft here has reportedly gone viral on the social media on Saturday. The home guard in dock has been identified as Upendra Behera.

Soon after the video aired on televisions, IG Santosh Bala directed home guard commandant to probe the matter. The accused home guard has also been barred from duty till the inquiry ends. “This is an unfortunate incident. I have asked the comandant to launch an inquiry and take necessary action,”Bala told OTV over phone.

According to reports, Upendra had brutally thrashed the person identified as Baya Sardar at Jharadihi station chhak under Tiring police limits in connection with the theft of a bicycle.

In the video, Upendra is seen inhumanly beating up the man with his hands and legs tied in full public view.

Though locals had tried to stop such barbaric act, the home guard was seen torturing the man. Sources said, such incident was captured by an eye-witness on August 2.

Earlier, Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of Dabugaon police station in Nabarangpur district Subash Chandra Raiguru had allegedly destroyed maize crop of a farmer riding on his police vehicle at Gatiguda village under Umerkote police station on Thursday.
