Bhubaneswar: The suicide of Bargarh farmer Brunda Sahu allegedly over crop loss continues to remain a major political issue in the state with BJP State in-charge Arun Singh lambasting the State government over the farmers’ plight in Odisha.
Addressing a press conference here today, Singh alleged that Brunda Sahu of Kalapani village of Bargarh district had submitted his grievance to all concerned officials and requested them to save his crops, but all went in vain.
“Brunda Sahu had appealed all concerned officers to save his paddy crops. He even had staged a dharna for this. However, everything fell on deaf ears,” said Singh, adding that “The Agriculture and Labour Ministers gave sarcastic comments after his death. Such leaders should be sacked. ”
Singh further went on to say that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is supporting such errant ministers for mocking the farmers’ situation and BJD leaders are blaming others for farmer suicides.
“While the Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh governments provided bonus to farmers and concession in farm loans, the Odisha government is yet to come to the rescue of the farmers who are in distress,” Singh said.
At a Press meet here, the senior saffron party leader also briefed about various developmental programmes of the BJP-led Modi government at the Centre including ease of doing business and upgradation of India's rating by US credit rating agency Moody's.
Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout on the other hand reacted sharply on the statements of Singh and termed agriculture and the farmers’ death as State subjects.
“It is the constitutional responsibility of the state government to look after the farmers’ plights and it can also seek the Centre’s help to solve the issue. But I can’t help if some central ministers and leaders give vague statements after visiting different villages in the state. They are creating unfavorable atmosphere in the state politics which is unfortunate in a democratic set up,” Rout said.
