Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high in the State Capital after BJP supporters barged into the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) office here during their protest against alleged corruption in the civic body.

Hundreds of activists of the saffron party, including women, assembled before the BMC office and staged a demonstration protesting corruption and inefficiency of the civic body.

The situation turned ugly when the mob had a scuffle with police personnel who were present at the spot and later barged into the office by breaking barricades. The protestors even hurled eggs at the office building during the demonstration. However, the cops later brought the situation under control.

In reaction, Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said, “The Government of India has recognized Bhubaneswar as the number one Smart City. The BMC is taking up various developmental works, including sewerage, water supply and cleanliness drive in phased manner. Co-operation of all stakeholders is required to develop a city.”

People would not accept the false allegations made by the BJP, he added. On egg attack, the Mayor said, “Let the matter rest. People will decide on it.”
