Cuttack: A day after a BJD corporator of Cuttack Municipal Corporation, Ranjita Biswal, was arrested over her alleged links with notorious gangster brothers-Sushil and Sushant Dhala Samant (D-brothers); party’s Barabati-Cuttack MLA Debasish Samantray said that elected representatives having criminal links is inappropriate in a democratic set-up.

Ranjita was arrested on Wednesday for being part of a conspiracy hatched by D-brothers from jail to kill four persons, mostly contractors and others who were once part of their criminal gang.

Cuttack DCP Akhilesvar Singh had informed that Ranjita Biswal supplied firearms to one Mrutyunjay Nayak alias Miku, a shooter who was arrested on March 4 for trying to kill contractor Bijay Kumar Pal of Subhadrapur.

After the arrest of Ranjita, the BJD legislator denied involvement of any other BJD corporators in the case.

"Ranjita is interrogated as per law and many other things will be exposed. It will have no effect on BJD. No political party will accept a member involved in criminal activities. No public representative should be part of such activities," said Samantray.

The legislator accepted that he had attended a social event organised by the D-brothers. He however said that Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a few Congress and BJP leaders have also attended various political events of D-brothers.

Samantray alleged Pradhan of having criminal links as he had called the D-brothers as Baimundi - The Protector of Cuttack District.

In reaction to the allegations, BJP spokesperson Sajjan Sharma criticised the mentality of Samantray and said "Samantray was exposed in a photograph with the lady don - Ranjita. This shows the criminal links of the BJD. Presence of D-brothers in various events of the party reveals the criminal links of the ruling party. I demand a probe into the links between BJD and D-brothers."
