Bhubaneswar: Biju Mahila Janata Dal (BMJD), the women wing of the ruling-BJD today staged a dharna in front of Raj Bhavan protesting the recent hike in price of LPG by the Centre and demanded immediate rollback of the decision.

The women activists of the regional party raised slogans against the Centre terming the move as anti-poor. Demanding immediate rollback of the price hike, the party submitted a memorandum to Governor SC Jamir.

BMJD President Pramila Mallick told reporters that the Centre has hiked the price of LPG at least 19 times since July 2016 and BJD would intensify its agitation at the grassroots level if the decision is not withdrawn.

“We staged a protest against hike in price of subsidised LPG by Rs 4 and non-subsidised by Rs 93. We demand immediate rollback. We will stage dharna in front of RDC offices on November 6. We will take our agitation to each household till the Centre fulfils our demands," Mallick said.

The women activists will stage dharna in all 314 blocks of the state in coming days if the Centre does not agree to their demand, she said.

“The women wing of the party which had staged similar agitation in August criticised the ministry of Petroleum saying that it has put up posters in each petrol pump claiming that the Centre is giving respect to women by giving them gas connections. But women had not expected this kind of respect with having to pay more."
