Bhubaneswar: Politics is now active over BJD’s proposal to form ‘Biju Juba Bahini’ (Youth Brigade) as part of its ambitious plan to connect with the youths in all panchayats and blocks of Odisha.

The Sports and Youth Department through an advertisement has invited applications from youths in the age group of 15 to 35 years for the Biju Juba Bahini.

“As youths have a key role to play in the development of society, we have decided to create Biju Juba Bahini where they can voluntarily register themselves,” said Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Chandra Sarathi Behera.

However, the department has categorically ruled out the possibility of providing any kind of employment saying that it is a platform where motivated youths will get a scope to work as volunteers in various social welfare projects in different parts of the State.

However, political parties see the idea of a youth brigade in the name of former chief minister Biju Patnaik as a tool to mislead the youth and use them for promotion of ‘Brand Naveen’ ahead of the 2019 elections.

“BJD has become a master of doing politics at the expense of the State exchequer over the last 17 years. It is their strategy to include youth and engage them in party works,” said BJP General Secretary, Pruthviraj Harichandan.

“BJD’s youth brigade is purely a party forum as they have realized that they are losing ground in Odisha,” said Opposition Congress Chief Whip, Tara Prasad Bahinipati.
