Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has decided to carry out road construction work in 800 remote villages in Rayagada district. The decision of the government came against the backdrop of the recent report of a pregnant woman being forced to cross a river in a stretcher on her relatives' shoulders for delivery in the district.

At a high level meeting, headed by Koraput MP Jhina Hikaka, as many as 800 remote areas were identified in the district where people are yet to get connected with the main land.

"We are bracing up to start the construction works soon. We have talked to the government and at war footing, construction of bridges in the areas would be done," said Hikaka.

"We have identified 800 villages in the district 'as hard to reach villages'. The construction works would be funded under Gopabandhu Grameen Yojana, Biju KBK Yojana and Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS)," said the district collector Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar.
