Bhubaneswar: Less than a week after the mass molestation incident in IT hub Bengaluru shook the whole country, three girls were harassed by a group of youths on Friday on a busy road here, raising serious questions on the safety of women in the State capital.

Police have registered a case in this regard and begun investigation after receiving a complaint from the victims.

Sources said, the incident happened when three girls along with one of their male friends were chit-chatting near Magnet square in Patia area. In the meantime, some bike-borne youths came and passed some obscene comments to the girls. Even if the girls protested, the miscreants continued to pass lewd comments and drove away.

Making up their minds to teach the boys a lesson, all four followed the hooligans on the Patia-Nandankanan road on two bikes. After following them for about a kilometre, the girls didn’t find them as the bikers disappeared from the scene all of a sudden, forcing the girls to stop midway.

In the meantime some youths believed to be the friends of the miscreants came running towards the girls and started abusing them with foul languages. When the girls protested, they started harassing them physically.

"When we stopped for a while on the road, some youths came towards us and started using foul languages. Soon a verbal duel ensued between us and suddenly one of the boys caught my hair and gave me a blow on the backside of my neck. After that as I managed to slip from his clutch and tried to take the video of the incident on my mobile, he dashed it on the road", said one of the girls.

They too beat up our male friend who was with us during the incident, she added.

The girls have filed a complaint with Nandankanan police and the police have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.
