Bhubaneswar: As expected, the Bargarh farmer suicide issue rocked the Odisha Assembly with leader of opposition Narsingha Mishra moving a privilege motion against agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathy on the issue here today.

Mishra has accused Maharathy for providing false and misleading information in the house on the suicide of Bargarh farmer Hadu Bagarti.

In his statements, Maharathy had earlier stated that Bagarti had committed suicide over family feud. However, a fresh probe was ordered after deceased Bagarti’s family claimed that there was no disturbance rather he committed suicide over crop loss and debt burden.

Senior Congress leader Taraprasad Bahinipati has demanded for immediate suspension of Bargarh collector for providing a report on the issue without conducting proper investigation by visiting the spot and agricultural field of the deceased farmer.

“The Collector should be immediately suspended and if needed he should be dismissed under article 311 after proper investigation,” said Bahinipati.

Sources said, Bagarti had taken a loan of nearly Rs 19,000 for cabbage and paddy cultivation in his three and half acres of land. But he had committed suicide by consuming pesticide following the crop loss due to scarcity of water and mental stress on February 26.
