Balasore: Ahead of the scheduled visit of Medical Council of India (MCI) representatives to the government medical college in Balasore, the Additional Secretary of Health Department Surajit Das on Sunday visited the campus to take stock of the infrastructure and other verticals.

"The hospital has complied with all required norms and condition. We expect MCI to approve the seats on its next visit following which classes for the first MBBS batch with 100 seats, can commence during the 2018-19 academic year," said Das.

While the infrastructure of the medical college is ready and adequate staff have been posted, admissions into MBBS seats can only start after receiving ‘Letter of Permission (LoP)’ from the MCI.

"It has been four years since the required infrastructure for the medical college is ready and it just needs the permission from MCI to start admission. Why the delay? Centre should pressurize the MCI to grant permission by end of this month," said Former Balasore MLA Arun Dey.

Meanwhile, the delay in arrival of MCI team has frustrated the locals and they have decided to take to streets if the college does not start admitting  its first batch of students from the current academic session.

"We all have to unite for the development of Balasore and compel MCI to visit the college and grant Letter of Permission (LoP) as the future of many students depends on it," said member of Balasore Development Forum, Bikram Panda.
